Upside Wins Championships

Barrett breaks down his 2024 fantasy football strategy with his ‘My Guys’, must-draft players and ‘Exodia plays’.
“Upside wins championships” is the thesis behind Barrett’s draft strategy; The average drafter cares far too much about a player’s most likely outcome than their upside.
Drafting a player who beats their ADP isn’t good enough. You want high-end producers, every-week starters and foundational assets. Most of us have a less than 10% chance to win our leagues and always have the waiver-wire safety net to fall back on. Take some risks, don’t be scared to strike out and swing for the fences every pick…it’s fantasy season.

These are Scott Barrett’s Exodia players, the ones who can win you your league.
Quarterback
Scott is okay with you taking Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts earlier in your draft (at cost) due to later-round RB/WR value, but he doesn’t see the point when his Exodia player can be had in Round 9 or later:
Exodia - Jayden Daniels. Daniels is one of those players that you circle on your draft sheet and target in every draft. He’s currently RB14 on Yahoo!, QB12 on ESPN and QB12 on NFL.com. You have Scott’s permission to reach a round to take him, if needed.
If you miss on Daniels, you’ll find enough value on the waivers to find low-end QB1 production. If Scott gets sniped on Daniels in a draft, he plans to add Justin Fields off waivers for pure upside. If you don’t love Daniels, you should target Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Anthony Richardson, Joe Burrow & Kyler Murray.
Running Back
Scott believes CMC, Breece Hall and Bijan Robinson should be the first three players off of the board due to high-end RB value. 58.9% of all ESPN teams to make the finals in 2023 had CMC on their squad. They can carry you.
Some of Scott’s thoughts:
Achane (R3) carries a ton of risk but he also has immense upside, you can pair him with Mostert later on.
He’s probably never drafting Barkley (R1/R2) due to his price tag
Kenneth Walker (R4) and Aaron Jones (R5) have clear value.
Exodia - Jonathan Brooks. Scott loves Brooks as much as he loved his Exodia from last year (Rachaad White), but it’ll be a much bumpier ride. He’s going to miss a couple of weeks and then he’ll likely be slowly eased into games, it might take over two months before you’re comfortable starting him. But Brooks is also slotted for the Rachaad White role in Dave Canales’ offense, which is extremely valuable.
Brooks is significantly more talented than White, and far more than Hubbard and Sanders - he’s an every down back with nuclear potential in the back half of the season. The potentially horrid Panthers offense won’t matter if he’s heavily utilized in the passing game. He’s priced in R9 - target him.
Outside of the top 24 at the position, Scott is targeting guys like Chase Brown and Tyjae Spears, who have some juice and can both claim bigger roles, as well as J.K. Dobbins, Rico Dowdle, Javonte Williams and Gus Edwards, in certain situations.
Wide Receiver
After the consensus top 7 WRs, there’s a big fall-off. The players going in R2 are in a similar tier to players going in R3-R6. But here are his targets:
Exodia WR1- Cooper Kupp. Kupp had a streak where he eclipsed 16.0 fantasy points in 26 of 27 full games (only 1 game excluded due to injury), averaging 25.4 FPG over this span. This was the best 27-game streak by any WR in fantasy football history. Kupp was dealing with injuries all last season, so Puka stepped up - but if Kupp is fully healthy, he's the alpha. Sure there's risk, but the R4 cost has that already baked in and the upside is league-winning. He's Scott's WR8.
In the next tier, Scott values Smith, Waddle and Samuel and…
Exodia WR2 - Malik Nabers. Nabers is Scott's WR17 and clear value in this tier based on upside. He's still violently undervalued on all massive sites and he's a near-elite level prospect who's going to command huge target share in NY. Scott believes there's a 50/50 chance he outscores Marvin Harrison Jr.
The next tier is one Scott is avoiding at all costs, besides Amari Cooper, Tee Higgins and…
Exodia WR3 - Rashee Rice. He's going in R8-R9 on all major sites which seems to be baking in some suspension possibility, but Scott doesn't think that happens in 2024. He had a historically great rookie season, ranking 8th among all WRs in FPG from Week 12 on. Sure, there's more competition for targets with Brown and Worthy, but Rice is WR1 for Mahomes. Reach for him.
After this tier, massive value lies in Diontae Johnson, Chris Godwin and Calvin Ridley - all who can eat up targets and thrive.

The Twelve.
These are the 12 players vital to the Guru’s draft strategy in 2024. Breakouts, values and must-haves.
Jordan Love — In terms of QBs being drafted as starters (top-12), Love’s the best value pick at the position.
Jake Ferguson — As the TE11 drafted around 90 picks in, he’s best value pick as a TE1 this year.
? — He’s the Guru’s top WR breakout candidate, and if he pops, you'll crush it because he’ll likely be only your WR4. Read the full article to find out who this is.
Tyjae Spears — The Guru loved him last year, and he should be better behind one of worst volume backs in the league in Tony Pollard.
Jameson Williams — He’s volatile, but “no risk-it, no biscuit.” Everything is in place for a breakout, and his 100+ ADP is great value.
Derrick Henry — The Guru has him as an anchor RB1 at the end of Round 2/early Round 3. A top target if you go WR early.
James Cook — Cook is a great RB2 in Round 4 or a viable RB1 if I go receiver-heavy the first three rounds.
DeVonta Smith — The Guru always loves him and views him as one of the best WR2/3 value picks out there.
Kenneth Walker — His combination of youth, talent, and reasonable cost makes him a really nice RB2 target.
Rhamondre Stevenson — One of the best RB values on the board, and a great RB3 pick at his 70 overall ADP.
Chase Brown — He’s a great target as an RB4 around the 10th round of a 12-teamer because he might have RB2 upside.
Tyler Conklin — The Guru’s pick for sleeper of the year, or value pick of the year. I think he will post TE1 numbers and he’s a free pick.
The Plan
The QB Plan. At QB, the Guru is fading the safe route and avoiding the top options at the position due to the depth.
He'll start targeting QBs after Round 4, but his top 5 favorite at ADP include Jordan Love (86), Anthony Richardson (59), Patrick Mahomes (35), Trevor Lawrence (128), and Caleb Williams (102).
The RB Plan. The Guru has these core four RBs at the top of his list, including Breece Hall, Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jonathan Taylor. If you're picking mid round 1, these are your guys.
If you take a WR in the first, Derrick Henry is a great target. Others include Rachaad White, Jonathon Brooks, Tyjae Spears and Ray Davis.
The WR Plan. The Guru is more inclined to pick a power RB in the first due to position scarcity - unless he has access to Tyreek Hill, Ceedee Lamb or Jamarr Chase. This opens the floodgates to target WR in rounds 2 and 3, including Garrett Wilson, Marvin Harrison Jr., Drake London and Chris Olave.
There's a ton of values at different tiers after this, which include guys like Devonta Smith, Rashee Rice, Christian Watson, Jameson Williams, Jahan Dotson and more.

I've seen so many words written and debates had over the "optimal strategy in 2024 fantasy football drafts." But have you ever considered drafting T.J. Hockenson and Tua Tagovailoa just so you can name your team "Hock-Tua"?
