Press Conferences, Reviewed

Scott Barrett’s Takeaways

The Patriots Post-Draft presser // Eric Canha, USA TODAY Sports

Scott collects all of the nuggets and small details that teams reveal during their draft press conferences… here are some highlights:

Patriots: The Pats must have been higher on Drake Maye than they let on - the Vikings and Giants aggressively tried to move up to pick number 3 - but the Patriots never budged. Their brass let it be known that Maye might take some time to develop, but it seemed like he was always their top target.

Rams: McVay is on record saying that Blake Corum has a lot of traits that remind him of Kyren Williams, and McVay loves Kyren Williams. Scott believes Corum is ‘a rich man’s Alexander Mattison’ - meaning - he might not be a smash RB1 without any competition, but he’s an elite backup who has the same running style and ability that Kyren has. He’ll be an easy plug-and-play for the Rams when needed. Corum is probably a high-end handcuff to start the season.

Jaguars: The Jags selected WR Brian Thomas Jr. and believe he’ll help as a deep threat. Thomas Jr had 15 deep touchdowns in 2023, 80% of which came on the ‘go’ route. The Jags expect him to take the top off of the defense, and Scott believes this might play out better in ‘real’ football than fantasy - comparing him to Will Fuller. Scott isn’t sure this archetype of WR can be valuable to fantasy in the two-high era… but Thomas is a dart throw.

Rookies Rising & Falling

Tom shares who he’s more and less optimistic about for the 2024 fantasy season.

Running Backs

Upgrade - Trey Benson. The Cardinals drafted James Conner’s eventual successor at the top of the third round. Brett believes Benson is the cleanest back from 2024 to project as a bell-cow type and Tom agrees. Connor is 29, entering the final season of a three-year contract and had less of a role in the passing game last season.

Benson will have to compete with Emari Demercado and Michael Carter for a role in the passing game, and Conner should take all of the goal line work, but due to age and injury history, Benson is a solid RB3 upside option.

Downgrade - Blake Corum. The Rams needed to build their depth in the RB room, so they took Corum 83rd overall and look to slot him right behind Kyren Williams.

Corum is one of Brett's guys - calling him the total package in this year’s class (as we outlined in our last edition), but he’ll be a backup to start the year. He should be going in the RB4 range but is setting up to be one of the leagues best handcuffs… he could be on the RB1 radar if Kyren misses time.

Wide Receivers

Upgrade - Keon Coleman. The Bills took Coleman with the first pick in the second round, and he landed in a phenomenal opportunity to make an immediate impact. Brett tells us Coleman has a ridiculous catch radius and a good vertical skill set - placing his upside somewhere in the range of D.K. Metcalf and Courtland Sutton.

With Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis leaving the team, Coleman joins Buffalo as the immediate X receiver and will be key in the red zone and downfield attack. He’s likely a boom or bust WR3/4, but he should have more consistency than Gabe Davis.

Downgrade - Adonai Mitchell. Mitchell was sliding down the draft board, but the Colts stepped in to stop it. He’s 6 foot 2, and runs a 4.34. So what’s the issue?

Mitchell will have to compete against Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce and Josh Downs for targets - all three are competent, young receivers. Pittman is top dog, but the hope is that Anthony Richardson forms a trust with Mitchell in the early going, so he might be worth a late-round flyer.

Quarterbacks

Upgrade - Jayden Daniels. This was Washington’s guy all the way through, and now he gets the keys to the kingdom in DC. He won the Heisman Trophy as a 5th year senior while throwing the ball to Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. Brett says Daniels will be an immediate top-five running QB, while possessing the intangible qualities to improve as a passer.

His rushing ability makes him a more exciting fantasy option than Caleb Williams, and he has a decent receiving core in Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Luke McCaffrey and Ben Sinnott. Daniels excels in downfield passing, which should be a massive boost for playing in a Kliff Kingsbury offense.

Downgrade - Michael Penix. This was a draft stunner, with the Falcons selection unlikely to be seeing the field for the foreseeable future behind Kirk Cousins. Brett called him the best pure passer in the class while struggling at times with accuracy and playing outside of structure.

He has no redraft value (outside of deep Superflex leagues) and even struggles with value in Dynasty. Pay attention if Kirk gets hurt, but until then, pay no mind.

Best Bets

2024 NFL Futures Risers & Fallers

Eagles GM Howie Roseman // YONG Kim, Staff Photographer

Tom Brolley dives into 2024 Post-Draft NFL Futures Risers & Fallers.

Risers - Philadelphia Eagles. +1500 odds (6.25% implied odds) to +1300 odds (7.14%).

Early this off-season, Tom urged the Fantasy Points subscribers to place a bet on the Eagles to win the Super Bowl at +2200 odds. Since then, the market has moved significantly in Tom’s favor. The Eagles consistently put themselves in the mix to make a run and have added a bounty of quality players through the draft, trades and free agency. We hope you got in on this bet from Tom early.

Fallers - Buffalo Bills. 10.5 wins (- 145) to 10.5 (+100).

Buffalo’s ceiling is still extremely high (their Super Bowl odds are still at +1300) but under 10.5 wins has moved a bit since they lost some key players and have struggled with the salary cap. They (shockingly) let the Chiefs take Xavier Worthy in a trade-back, so now we’ll be watching the careers of Worthy and Keon Coleman closely. They're too much of a wild card for me right now.

2024 NFL Rookie of the Year Awards

Tom breaks down the 2024 NFL Rookie Class to see who the best candidates are to bring home the awards.

OROTY - Jayden Daniels (+1400, FanDuel, Placed April 26).

The odds have since shifted to +600, so we hope you got in early with the help from Tom in the Fantasy Points Discord channel or his NFL Futures article. He’ll be one of the leagues top running threats on Day 1 and should get plenty of volume. Could this be the second coming of Robert Griffin III?

DROTY - Chop Robinson (+2500, FanDuel, Placed May 6).

Robinson is a primary pass rusher, the position that’s dominated this award in recent seasons, and the Dolphins might have an immediate need for him to contribute on Day 1 due to injuries with Jaelen Phillips and Bradley Chubb. He could benefit from the attention that the other premiere guys on this D-Line get. The formula is here for a big impact.
