Ryan Heath uses the Fantasy Points Data Suite to find the six biggest hacks for NFL offensive coordinators, including what plays to call and when to call them.

Passing holds a massive efficiency advantage over running on both 1st (+0.154 EPA/play) and 2nd down (+0.117), while waiting until you’re forced to throw on 3rd down produces negative EPA.

And 2nd-and-short might be the ultimate cheat code. Deep shots (15+ air yards) in those situations generate an absurd +0.460 EPA per attempt - roughly 3X higher than any other result in the study. The downside is minimal, too: miss the shot, and offenses can still convert 3rd-and-short on the ground at 70%.

The takeaway: Throw early, and when you earn 2nd-and-short, don’t waste the opportunity with another run.

Play-action dropbacks generated +0.115 EPA/play, compared to essentially zero (-0.001) without it, and 30 of 32 teams improved their baseline efficiency when using play action.

And forget about needing to “establish the run” first. Play action still provided a +0.130 EPA/play advantage before a team had even called its first designed run. There’s little evidence of diminishing returns, either - the teams using play action the most actually benefited from it the most.

The takeaway: Use play action early, use it often, and don’t worry about establishing the run first.

Going for it on 4th-and-1 or 2 generally beats punting, particularly around midfield. But once you decide to go, the optimal play call depends on the distance.

On 4th-and-1, QB sneaks are king, converting 81% of the time and generating +0.86 EPA/play. That advantage isn’t just the Eagles, either - remove them entirely and sneaks still convert at nearly 80%. On 4th-and-2, play-action dropbacks have been the best option, converting 69% of the time.

The takeaway: Go for it on 4th-and-short - sneak it from a yard out, and turn to play action when you need two.

So, which playcallers actually follow these principles? Ryan graded 42 playcallers from 0-100 based on how often they utilize all six efficiency hacks - not the results their offenses ultimately produced.

Sean McVay takes the top spot with an 80 overall score, followed by Kevin O’Connell (78) and Ken Dorsey (76). Ben Johnson (69) ranks fourth, including a near-perfect score for play-action usage (98) and a perfect 100 for operating under center.

The biggest surprise comes much further down the list: new Browns HC Todd Monken ranks 36th with a score of just 39. Despite overseeing incredibly efficient offenses in Baltimore, Monken scores poorly in early-down passing (26), box advantages (7), and 4th-down aggressiveness (33).

There’s an important caveat - Monken had Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. Since Henry arrived, Baltimore is the only team with positive EPA on designed 1st-and-10 runs (+0.03) and averaged an NFL-best 6.07 YPC in those situations. Even then, the Ravens were still roughly +0.12 EPA/play better when dropping back.

The takeaway: McVay and O’Connell are among the league’s most faithful followers of these efficiency principles, while Monken is the fascinating outlier. His move from Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry to Cleveland should tell us a lot about whether his tendencies were dictated by personnel or philosophy.
