MARKET REPORT

Easy Pickens

Theo Gremminger analyzes every fantasy football angle from the Cowboys and Steelers following the trade of WR George Pickens.

George Pickens is heading to the Big D! The Pittsburgh Steelers sent the 24-year-old WR to Dallas along with a 2026 sixth-round pick, and in return, they received a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

He’s the perfect outside compliment to CeeDee Lamb’s slot-heavy role, and even with Lamb commanding his usual 150 targets, there’s still plenty of opportunity for Pickens to have his best season as a pro. Jalen Tolbert and Brandin Cooks combined for 132 targets in 2024, and a significant portion of those should head Pickens' way — it’s not overly optimistic to think Pickens could set career highs in targets (current high: 106), TD receptions (five), and catches (63), while potentially challenging his 1,140-yard mark from 2023.

And let’s be honest… a pass-catcher getting as far away from Arthur Smith as possible is always a good thing for fantasy football.

Statistically Significant

Ryan Heath dives into key statistics to determine why they're important, how they're predictive, and how we can use them for 2025 fantasy football strategy.

Designed Targets

Think of designed targets as pre-determined plays. Rather than relying on a QB’s decision-making, the recipient of a designed target is set in stone the moment the play call comes in. Although this goes against the golden rule of “targets are earned,” those who lead the league in this category tend to have a steady floor (especially in PPR leagues) with the chance for some YAC-related upside.

So which players should expect to be near the top of the league in designed targets this season?

  • Jags WRs Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter:

Under Liam Coen in 2024, Chris Godwin averaged a position-leading 4.8 FPG on designed targets (the difference between ranking as the ~WR2 or the ~WR24), with Bucky Irving and Rachaad White stepping in down the stretch to both rank top-5 in designed targets per game at their position.

  • Dolphins RB De’Von Achane and TE Jonnu Smith:

The Dolphins have ranked in the top 5 in screen targets over each of the past two seasons. Accordingly, Achane led all RBs in FPG on screens during both his years in the NFL, including the most in Fantasy Points Data history (4.9) last season. Meanwhile, Smith saw his usage increase with the decline of Tyreek Hill, and his 2.3 FPG on screens tied for the most by a TE in Fantasy Points Data history as well. After the Dolphins made no real offseason additions to their receiving corps, expect much of the same for these two weapons.

YAC/Attempt

Evaluating RB play independently of his offensive line, scheme, and overall team environment can be especially difficult. Much like missed tackles forced per touch (MTF/touch), a player’s yards after contact per attempt (YACO/A) can provide us a window into their inherent running ability. This can highlight which RBs may have the burst to take advantage of a positive change in situation or team context, such as…

  • Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker:

Aside from ranking top-6 in YACO/A (2.65) last season, Walker led the league in MTF/touch (0.30) and ranks 2nd in total missed tackles forced since entering the NFL. Plus, he’s the perfect fit for new OC Klint Kubiak’s outside zone scheme (just ask Kubiak himself), and has the opportunity for more passing game work, as Kubiak’s backfields have ranked 10th and 1st in total RB targets.

  • Titans RB Tony Pollard:

After a rough 2023 season, Pollard’s advanced metrics soared back to his previous heights, as he averaged 2.76 YACO/A (4th-best) and had a 5.0% explosive run rate (14th). That was despite brutal offensive surroundings, with the Titans’ offensive line ranking bottom-3 in adjusted yards before contact per attempt (1.37) and Will Levis ranking last in ANY/A (4.61). With 1st overall pick Cam Ward under center and the Titans spending up on LT Dan Moore and G Kevin Zeitler in free agency, Pollard should smash his RB26 Underdog ADP.

Power Rankings

Betting expert Tom Brolley reveals his 2025 NFL Power Rankings following the NFL Draft.

Notable Contenders

Jalen Hurts // Cooper Neill, Getty Images

  • Philadelphia Eagles (#1): with the most complete roster in the NFL, Philly is the clear choice atop the list.

  • San Francisco 49ers (#8): the Niners remain in the top-10, despite key losses like Deebo Samuel, Javon Hargrave, and Dre Greenlaw.

  • Los Angeles Chargers (#12): LA will look to build on a successful first season under HC Jim Harbaugh, thanks to key additions like RB Najee Harris and rookies RB Omarion Hampton and WR Tre Harris.

Notable Pretenders

Michael Penix Jr. // Cooper Neill, Getty Images

  • Atlanta Falcons (#25): QB Michael Penix Jr. showed flashes, and the team spent the offseason bolstering their defense, but they still have a lot to prove.

  • Carolina Panthers (#27): Brolley doesn’t appear to be buying the Bryce Young resurgence, even with the addition of rookie WR Tetairoa McMillan.

  • New Orleans Saints (#32): The retirement of QB Derek Carr is the latest addition to a long list of reasons not to believe in the Saints this season.
