Auction Draft Strategy

Jayden Daniels at LSU // Tarun Kakarala

Brian Drake was joined by Joe Dolan on The Fantasy Points Podcast to talk to Drew Davenport about Auction Draft strategies.

Drew Davenport is a two-time Kings Classic Auction Champion, playing against the best of the best… if you play auctions, this is for you.

How to track your budget. If you’re in an online auction draft, the site will track most of this for you but won’t help you track position scarcity, roster composition or team needs. You need to be fully dialed in on every other manager in the room and what they’re doing, constantly.

Joe Dolan looks for The Hammer, who is the person who has the most money. You always need to know who The Hammer is, what cash they have, and what their roster looks like. Don’t let The Hammer bully you.

Par Sheet. The Par Sheet is a way for you to spend your money judiciously. The biggest challenge for auction drafters is to not spend too fast, but also spending fast enough to get elite talent on your team. Drew creates a sheet with all of his roster spots and puts an exact dollar amount on each roster spot as a guide.

The number you put next to a roster spot is a guide, not a limit. It gives you a target for what you can do based on your other spending. This tells you how important each dollar is, helps your preparation and keeps your vision clear when players are dropping. The Par Sheet is your plan of attack.

2024 QB Strategy. Joe Dolan is monitoring the elite QB market for auction drafts this season, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Anthony Richardson. But if the price is too high for players in that tier, he’s targeting Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels.

The guys want value here. If the elite tier falls lower than ADP and average spend, you target them. If the elite tier is highly priced, you jump down and snag Williams or Daniels, two QBs with game-breaking ability. Williams has a fantastic receiving core and Daniels could be similar to Justin Fields with his legs. Either way, value, value, value at QB.

League Winners

Targets, Values & Domination

The Fantasy Points team breaks down the players you need to know for your upcoming draft.

Quarterbacks

Value - Lamar Jackson (ADP 52). Lamar was QB3 in FPG and won his second MVP with the Ravens in 2023, and he’s finished QB9 or better in each of his five seasons as a starter. He’s coming off of career-highs in passing yards, completion percentage and YPA under Todd Monken. Lamar has league-winning upside but is priced below the elite tier of QBs. Smash.

Target - Joe Burrow (ADP 75). 2023 was a lost campaign for him, but Burrow is on a mission this season and is having his first normal camp (no illness or injuries) since 2020. Chase and Higgins are back and seeking new contracts so his targets are hungry, and they added a vertical threat in Jermaine Burton. The price yells multiple-round discount, so he’s worth the ADP.

League Winner - Jayden Daniels (ADP 109). He won the Heisman Trophy at LSU last season with an eye-popping 60.1 rushing YPG and 34 rushing TDs in 55 games. Brett Whitefield believes Daniels will immediately be a top-five running QB, a cheat code in fantasy. His receiving corps is sneaky-good and he’s in a good environment with OC Kliff Kingsbury. He’s a fringe top-12 price, so draft him and protect the pick with a cheap veteran later in the draft.

Running Backs

Value - Aaron Jones (ADP 67). Hamstring injuries derailed Jones for most of last season, but when he was healthy, the explosiveness was evident - he ended the season with five straight games with 100+ rushing yards. Jones is now a Viking, and his head coach Kevin O’Connell has shown he’ll give his lead back plenty of work. Jones might have some top-12 RB upside pop if he can stay on the field.

Target - Tyjae Spears (ADP 97). Spears quietly played just 6 fewer snaps than Derrick Henry did last season, and now Henry is in Baltimore. Sure, Tony Pollard is there to help fill the void, but new HC Brian Callahan said that he views Pollard and Spears as interchangeable options. Pollard will likely see more work early on due to his $10.5M contract, but Spears has the juice to push him for touches each week. We’d always recommend the younger, ascending player, so Spears is worth the investment.

League Winner - De’Von Achane (ADP 22). Achane had a historically efficient rookie season, leading the NFL in YPC (7.8), explosive run rate (12.6%) yards before contact (4.10) and yards after contact 3.67) - but he had just a 43% snap share. Achane will be battling for touches with 32-year-old Raheem Mostert and fourth-rounder Jaylen Wright - and Achane has shown some durability concerns - but he looks bulked up this offseason and could easily win you your league if he takes that backfield over. Don’t play scared, take him in the late second.

Stay Away Players

Players To Avoid & Overvalues

Nico Collins // Marc Lebryk, USA TODAY Sports

The Fantasy Points team breaks down the players you need to stay away from for your upcoming fantasy football draft.

Wide Receivers

Overvalue - Nico Collins (ADP 23). Collins went from an intriguing prospect to a full-blown star last year, finishing as the WR7 with 17.4 FPG. He’s also become a late second-round pick in 2024, despite more competition with target monster Stefon Diggs and a healthy Tank Dell. Collins is being drafted like his late-season performance will continue, but he’ll likely fall back to earth with more competition. Dell three rounds later is more enticing.

Avoid - Mike Williams (ADP 138). Williams was let go from the Chargers and he joined Aaron Rodgers on the Jets. He’s likely the second option behind Garrett Wilson, and he suffered a season-ending ACL injury three games into 2023. We’re unsure if he’ll retain some of his downfield explosive attack after his injury.

Tight Ends

Overvalue - Dalton Kincaid (ADP 54). While Kincaid is in a better position for targets this year with Diggs and Davis gone, Dalton Knox is still looming and the Bills look to be more run heavy in 2024. The local beat believes Knox will remain a focus in their offensive attack this year which limits Kincaid's ceiling. We prefer Mark Andrews, or waiting a round or two for Engram and Ferguson.

Avoid - T.J. Hockenson (ADP 138). Hockenson had surgery for a torn ACL and MCL in January, and it looks like he has a chance to miss the first four weeks. With no timeline for a return and the departure of Cousins, we'd prefer other options to an injured tight end with a rookie/new quarterback. Look to add him on waivers if dropped, though.
