Fantasy Impact

Best & Worst Fantasy Landing Spots

Caleb Williams & Roger Goodell // Gregory Shamus, Getty Images

CHI QB Caleb Williams - Chicago finally has their franchise QB in Williams, a player who they’ve built a phenomenal environment around. He lands on an offense with DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet and D’Andre Swift. There is potential for fantasy success right away.

Since 2000, 84 rookie QBs have started at least 6 games. Out of that group, only 15 have scored over 17 fantasy points per game in their rookie season, which would be good for a weekly starter/streamer. A high percentage of those QBs were the first or second overall pick. Be bullish on Caleb.

KC WR Xavier Worthy - In his Pre-Draft WR Dynasty Rankings article, Scott Barrett writes: ‘may God have mercy on our souls if he lands in Miami or Kansas City.’ The Chiefs decided they’re done watching deep balls fall incomplete (or dropped), so they went out and got Hollywood Brown, and now Worthy.

Expect the speedster to go in the 70s or 80s of best ball drafts, with players hoping he’s more Tyreek Hill than Mecole Hardman… we’ll see.

Worst

LV TE Brock Bowers - This is good for the Raiders, but bad for fantasy players. They’re going into the season with Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew behind center, and HC Antonio Pierce seems to favor the run game right now.

The league average yards per attempt with a clean pocket was 7.4 (Dak Prescott). O’Connell averaged 6.6 YPA from a clean pocket and Minshew was 6.9 YPA. Bowers will also have to compete for targets with one of the best wide receivers of all time - and have to battle a competent Michael Mayer for playing time.

CAR WR Xavier Legette - This feels like deja vu. Just a year after spending an early pick on Jonathan Mingo, a receiver with a risky profile, they do the same with Legette. They’re both very athletic, protypical WRs without much college production.

The hope here is that Bryce Young redeems himself in his second season and that Legette has a year similar to Rashee Rice. He’ll enter a room with Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen and Jonathan Mingo. Graham wants to stay far away for fantasy.

Draft Analysis

Brett vs. The NFL

Using Brett Whitefields Prospect Guide, we look at the results of the NFL draft and see what we can learn.

Winners

Vikings. The Vikings added two top 10 players from Brett’s Prospect Guide, which includes J.J. McCarthy at the top of Brett’s 2024 Prospect Big Board. Brett says McCarthy has ‘glimpses of John Elway and Rich Gannon’. Wheels up.

The Vikings also added one of the best defensive players in this draft in Dallas Turner, who Brett has 9th on his big board. He’s a prototypical speed rusher in today’s NFL, with impressive foundational traits: Explosiveness, bend, quick hands and first step, alignment versatility… Turner has the goods. Huge W for the Vikings.

Ladd McConkey. The 6th ranked WR on Brett’s board fell to a phenomenal fantasy football landing spot with the Chargers. After losing both Mike Williams and Keenen Allen, McConkey should quickly become Justin Herbert’s new favorite target. He’ll have to battle for reps with Joshua Palmer and Quentin Johnston… double digit targets should come quickly.

McConkey is a route technician, deceptive vertical threat and has some positional versatility. He needs to get a bit stronger, but Brett sees a lot of Diontae Johnson in him. He’s NFL-ready in a great situation.

Losers

Falcons. What are they thinking? With the 8th overall pick, the Falcons took Michael Penix Jr. just months after giving Kirk Cousins an entire brinks truck. Penix is Brett’s 5th overall QB and will now be sitting for a couple of years despite his age. They should have looked at Laiatu Latu or Dallas Turner, the top two edge rushers on Brett’s board.

Instead, they used early draft capital to anger their highly paid QB and ignore glaring needs. Not how Falcons fans wanted this to go.

Kyren Williams. Hopefully you didn’t trade the farm for Williams in dynasty leagues after his league-winning 2023 season, because the Rams selected Michigan RB Blake Corum with the 83rd pick, who happens to be Brett’s top rated RB prospect.

Brett compares Corum’s burst, vision and creativity to JK Dobbins… who would be a great player if healthy. Welcome back to a committee backfield, Kyren.

Round 1 Draft Grades

Malik Nabers // Jonathan Bachman, Getty Images

Giants: B | Malik Nabers, WR, LSU

We’re (unfortunately) enduring another year of Daniel Jones, but at least they’re giving him a talented pass-catcher to work with. Nabers is solid and should produce. He enters as the most exciting WR in that room, with the chance of fantasy success in year 1 if Danny Dimes can get him the ball.

Jaguars: B+ | Brian Thomas JR, WR, LSU

Trevor Lawrence still needs more help on offense, but Brian Thomas Jr should help tremendously as the perfect mix of steady and upside and fill the void that Calvin Ridley left.

Eagles: Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toldeo

GM Howie Roseman continues his streak of ridiculousness. Howie was able to stand pat at 22 and land the top CB in the draft, a position they needed most. DC Vic Fangio is looking to completely rebuild this Eagles defense from the studs… they could make a difference in fantasy seasons.
